Fenton man sentenced to 63 months in prison

James Street

A man on probation following felony convictions in Jefferson County has been sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for felony possession of a firearm. James C. Street, 47, of Fenton admitted to arranging the sale of a gun while he was in St. Louis County Jail, despite not being allowed to possess a weapon because of previous felony convictions in Jefferson and St. Louis counties, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.

U.S. District Judge Henry E. Autrey on Oct. 30 sentenced Street, who pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. Street admitted to possessing three pistols and an AR-style rifle, court documents show.

Street will serve the federal prison sentence consecutively with sentences he will receive in Jefferson and St. Louis counties for violating the terms of his probation. He will serve the federal prison sentence consecutively with punishments he receives for felony charges in both Jefferson and St. Louis counties, court records said.

In Jefferson County, Street was on probation after pleading guilty to violating a protection order four separate times, first-degree property damage, interfering with custody and first-degree harassment in 2020. He also is facing a protection order violation charge following an April 2023 arrest in Jefferson County, according to court documents.

In St. Louis County, Street was on probation after being found guilty of third-degree assault in 2019. He also is facing a resisting arrest charge in St. Louis County following a May 2023 arrest, court records show.

Street had been sentenced to a total of 12 years in prison following the guilty pleas in Jefferson County and the St. Louis County guilty conviction. However, he was placed on five years’ probation, courts records said.

The federal gun possession charge stemmed from the sale of one of the pistols that Street arranged in June 2023, according to court documents.

St. Louis County Police contacted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on June 28, 2023, because of calls Street made from jail. The day before Street told an associate that he needed to “flip those thumpers” and “flip those stock options” during a phone call, the guilty-plea agreement said.

During a phone conversation with the associate, Street referred to one gun as the “big one” and “Anthony Raphael” and said he wanted $500 for the weapon. He called another gun the “highway 357,” which he wanted to sell for $300, and another gun the “38,” which he wanted $200 for, the plea said.

Street also spoke with another associate on June 27, 2023, and he referred to the guns by the same code words. Street was told by that associated that he had someone who would pay $350 for a .357-caliber revolver, according to the plea deal.

On June 28, one of Street’s associates met the buyer in a Walmart parking lot and sold the .357-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver. Officers watched the transaction in the parking lot, and they stopped the person who purchased the gun and recovered it, the plea said.

On July 14, 2023, the ATF searched the home of one of the associates Street spoke to on the phone. Agents found a .45-caliber pistol, .38-caliber revolver and a .223-caliber AR-style rifle at the home in the 8600 block of New Hampshire Avenue in Affton. The agents also found firearm magazines, ammunition and paperwork that belonged to Street, according to the plea agreement.
