A man who escaped from the custody of a St. Louis County corrections officer Saturday (June 24) was caught around noon today (June 28) in the 1100 block of Sunset Pointe, near Hwy. 67 south of Festus, authorities report.
The St. Louis County Police Department issued a press release saying its investigators located the suspect – 6-foot-6, 240-pound Bruce Brutsman, 36, St. Louis – and took him into custody.
"He resisted arrest," St. Louis County Police Officer Benjamin Granda said. "We will seek charges on resisting arrest with other charges we're seeking against him."
Granda, a media relations officer for his department, said no serious injuries were reported from the arrest and no local law enforcement officers participated in it.
According to earlier information released by St. Louis County Police, at approximately 9:30 a.m. June 24, Brutsman was taken from the St. Louis County Justice Center to a hospital for treatment after allegedly swallowing a battery. While at the hospital, Brutsman escaped from the custody of a St. Louis County correction officer and fled on foot.
"There was no physical altercation and no assault involved in the escape," Granda said.
At some point after his escape, Brutsman is suspected of stealing a 1997 Toyota Tercel from the 5800 block of Hampton Avenue. At 8:30 a.m. today, the vehicle was recovered in the 1100 block of Salisbury Street in St. Louis, St. Louis County Police report.
Brutsman was in police custody on charges of burglary and other property crimes, St. Louis County Police reported.
