A 56-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman, both of Hillsboro, were arrested after a woman who was in the process of moving out of a home in the 1000 block of Woodrow Street in Festus discovered them sleeping in the house, Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis said.
“Evidently, they were squatting there,” Lewis said. “The renter hadn’t been at the residence for a while. It looks like they (the Hillsboro man and woman) broke in, found nobody there and decided to stay there.”
Festus Police got a call about the squatters on Aug. 22.
“We were called for a break-in, in progress,” Lewis said.
He said the woman already was wanted on outstanding warrants from Jefferson County and Desloge.
They were arrested for alleged burglary and were released pending application for warrants, Lewis said.
