The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office found two skimmers – devices used to steal credit and debit card information – on gas pumps at the Phillips 66 station, 3625 Athena School Road, east of De Soto near Olympian Village. The skimmers were found Monday (July 2), the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported.
“The investigation revealed the skimmers were installed onto the pumps in the morning hours of Sunday (July 1). Due to the quick detection and seizure of the skimmers, the Sheriff’s Office does not believe the responsible party was able to access any stored data,” the report said.
Sgt. Matthew Moore said typically someone will place a skimmer on a gas pump, ATM or other machine that accepts credit cards, debit cards or bank cards and then the culprit will return for the skimmer and get the customers’ information off the device.
Since the skimmers were still on the gas pumps on July 2, Moore said it’s unlikely the culprit got anyone’s credit or debit card information. In addition, no one had reported any fraudulent activity connected to the skimmers at the De Soto gas station, Moore said this afternoon (July 3).
However, those who used a credit or debit card at the gas station between July 1 and July 2 are advised to monitor their bank accounts for fraudulent activity, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office tip line at 636-797-5515.
