The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of a purse from a car parked at the Mastodon State Historic Site, 1050 Charles J. Becker Drive, in Imperial. It appears the car’s door were not locked, police reported.
A woman called the Sheriff’s Office on April 3 to report the theft. She told deputies she believed she locked the doors to her 2021 Chrysler before walking on the trails at the historic site, the report said
However, when she returned to her car, her purse was missing. The purse contained the woman’s debit cards and an unknown amount of money. The car was not damaged, according to the report.
The woman said she initially thought she may have left her purse at home. When she could not find the purse at her home, she contacted the police, the report said.
As of April 3, the purse had not been located, and no suspects had been identified, Capt. Matt Moore said. He asks anyone with information about the theft to call the Sheriff’s Office at 636-797-5515.
Moore said the Sheriff’s Office urges people to secure their vehicles and hide any valuables left in vehicles from plain sight to deter theft.
