Kyle M. Portell, 24, of Festus has been sentenced to 10 years in prison following numerous felony charges for theft, burglary, stealing a firearm and possession of a controlled substance, court records show.
In June 2015, Portell, with the help of others, stole a bass boat, a pontoon boat, two boat motors, two trailers, tools, fishing equipment and other items valued at more than $34,000 from a storage building on Sunnyside Road in the Festus area and took them to an address in Imperial, the probable-cause statement said.
Portell reportedly got cash and methamphetamine in exchange for the boats and other stolen items, which were later recovered in Imperial.
In July 2015, he also stole radio equipment valued at $12,000 from two vehicles parked outside a home on River Hills Road in the Festus area, the report said.
Portell also burglarized two homes – one in April 2015 at a home on Shane Drive in Imperial and the other in July 2015 at a home on Cortez Circle in the Festus area, according to the report.
In addition, Portell stole or helped steal firearms from three vehicles – one in April 2015 from a vehicle parked at a home on Ron De Lee Drive in the Arnold area and two in July 2105, including one from a vehicle outside a home on Whispering Circle in the Festus area and one from a vehicle on Ridgecrest Drive in the Hillsboro area, the report said.
Also in April 2015, Portell was found with a controlled substance, the probable-cause statement said.
In a separate case, Portell was charged with felony stealing a firearm stemming from a July 2015 incident when he stole a pistol and other items from vehicles parked on Seclusion Woods in the Festus area, the probable-cause statement said.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of felony stealing, two counts of felony burglary, three counts of felony stealing a firearm and one count of felony possession of a controlled substance in one case and to one count of felony stealing a firearm and one count of misdemeanor stealing in the other case, court documents indicate.
On July 19, 2016, former Jefferson County Div. 1 Circuit Judge Robert G. Wilkins sentenced Portell to 10 years in prison for felony stealing stemming from the June 2015 incident, to seven years for the drug charge and to six six-year terms for the other charges. However, all the terms are to be served concurrently, or at the same time.
In addition, the terms are to be served concurrent with a six-year term Wilkins sentenced him to in July 2016 for felony stealing a firearm tied to the July 2015 incident on Seclusion Woods in the Festus area.
Jefferson County assistant prosecuting attorney Catherine M. Robertson handled the two cases.
All those terms Portell was sentenced to in Jefferson County also are to be served concurrent with a seven-year term he previously was sentenced to for felony receiving stolen property connected to a March 2015 incident in St. Louis County, according to court records.
He currently is in the Maryville Treatment Center.
Another defendant – Chad W. Koenig, 24, of Festus – was charged in connection with the June 2015 incident and with the July 2015 incident at the Hillsboro-area home, and after pleading guilty to one count of felony receiving stolen property and one count of misdemeanor stealing, he was sentenced in June 2016 to seven years in prison, but the sentence was suspended and he got five years’ probation, court papers show.
There was another defendant charged with felony receiving stolen property and misdemeanor stealing stemming from the July 2015 incident on Seclusion Woods in the Festus area – Daniel W. Manasco II, who was born in 1991 and lives in Festus – and in November 2016, he was sentenced to five years’ probation, according to court documents.
