Eureka Police are seeking charges against a 36-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, both of Union, for alleged theft and illegal use of a credit card, Chief Michael Wiegand said.

The suspects were arrested after a Gray Summit woman approached an officer at 10:34 p.m. June 9 in the parking lot at Walmart, 131 Eureka Town Center Drive, according to a police report.

The woman told the officer she had left her cell phone and wallet in a shopping cart in the parking lot’s cart corral, and when she returned to retrieve her items, they were gone, the report said.

The officer contacted the store manager to see if video was available to help with the investigation. In addition, the woman learned that someone had used the stolen card within an hour of it being stolen and charged $422.11 on it, and she shared that information with the officer, according to the report.

Store video allegedly showed that the female suspect, who was sitting on a bench inside the market-side entrance of Walmart, along with a male subject, had made the transaction with the victim’s card, the report said.

When the officer went looking for the man and woman, they had just gotten into a cab, which the officer flagged down before asking the two passengers to exit. The officer allegedly found the credit card, which had the victim’s name on it, on the pavement under the right rear passenger door of the cab, and when the officer searched the back seat, the victim’s debit card was found, according to the report.

The officer then searched the Union woman’s purse and allegedly found the victim’s wallet, driver’s license and receipt for items purchased at Walmart, the report said.

The female suspect complained about pregnancy complications and was taken by ambulance to St. Anthony’s Medical Center in south St. Louis County, the report said.

Eureka Police are seeking charges against the two through the Eureka Prosecutor’s Office, Wiegand said.
