Pevely Police Chief Ron Weeks is warning people against sending money to callers soliciting donations they claim will benefit local law enforcement agencies.
“We got a report Monday (Aug. 3) from a man who got a call (the previous weekend) from someone saying he was from a police support group and was calling for the Pevely Police,” Weeks said. “Basically, (the phone solicitor) said he was collecting for all Jefferson County law enforcement agencies and some of the money would come to Pevely. We don’t go out and solicit funds like this and, to my knowledge, we’ve never gotten any benefits from any agency like this.
“I think I would be very careful with calls of this nature before sending any money to these organizations.”
He urges Pevely residents who receive such calls to report them to Pevely Police at 636-475-5301 and people who live elsewhere to call their municipal police or the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
