Eureka Police report that a 65-year-old Pacific man had to be transported to the hospital after attempting to hang himself following an arrest for allegedly driving while intoxicated. The incident occurred at 8:20 p.m. March 11.
Police were called to a three-vehicle accident at Hwy. 109 and Augustine Road after the Pacific man allegedly hit another vehicle from behind, pushing that vehicle into the back of another one. The two vehicles that were rear-ended had been stopped at a light, police reported.
The Pacific man allegedly had a strong odor of alcohol and struggled to maintain his balance, and he allegedly admitted to drinking. He allegedly failed field sobriety tests and registered .176 percent blood-alcohol content, according to the report. In Missouri, .08 percent is the legal limit.
He was issued a summons to appear in Eureka Municipal Court for DWI, but because he didn’t have someone to drive him home, he was taken to the police station. While in a cell, he allegedly attempted to hang himself, the report said.
The man was then transported to SSM Health St. Clare Hospital in Fenton for a 96-hour observation, according to the report.
