Eureka Police are investigating the reported theft of two meter boxes --machines used to collect money at do-it-yourself car washes -- from the E Z Clean Car Wash, 79 Hilltop Village Center Drive, authorities reported.
The boxes are worth $8,000 together. There was no estimate for how much money the collection boxes had in them at the time of the theft, the report said.
Video surveillance at the business showed at 7:51 p.m. Jan. 29, a white pickup pulled into one of the two car wash bays where a box was removed. The four-door pickup had tinted windows and an extended cab, according to the report.
An unidentified man got out of the pickup and went to the side of the vehicle before going to the box. After spending about 20 seconds by the box, he carried it to the driver’s side of the pickup and left, the report said.
The boxes were carefully removed from the bays with no wires cut. The bars that held the boxes in place and the harnesses to hold the boxes were also taken, according to the report.
As of Feb. 15, the man driving the pickup had not been identified and the boxes had not been recovered, Capt. David Wilson said. Anyone with information about the incident should contact Eureka Police at 636-938-6000.
