A man spotted holding a syringe outside a Hillsboro convenience store last week was captured with the help of a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy and his K-9 unit dog, Hillsboro Police Chief Charles Bennett reports.
Bennett said his department received a call at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 22 about a man seen with a syringe outside the Circle K convenience store, 10201 Business 21.
“Officers arrived and the man ran into the woods,” Bennett said. “The officers pursued him, but lost sight of him. One officer continued to pursue him on foot and the other by the car.”
The suspect crossed Hwy. 21 and was soon captured by the Sheriff’s Office dog and its handler, Bennett said.
“He was found with the syringe and one pill,” the chief said. “The syringe contained a clear liquid.”
Bennett said the items have been submitted for a toxicology report.
The suspect, 26, of Hillsboro was arrested and released pending application for warrants, Bennett said.
Hillsboro Police sent a report on the incident to the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for evaluation, he said.
The results of the toxicology study will affect the type of charges sought, Bennett said, although his department has already requested a resisting arrest charge against the suspect.
