A 32-year Crystal City Police officer was bitten twice while assisting a man having an apparent seizure on Feb. 19.

Police and personnel from the Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District received a call at 11:16 p.m. for assistance in a sick case in the first block of Bellamy Drive.

The sick person, a 26-year-old Crystal City man, “became combative and bit one of the officers in the arm,” Crystal City Police Chief Chad Helms said.

While trying to load the man, who was on a stretcher, into the ambulance, it happened again.

“He bit the same officer in the area above his knee,” Helms said. “The officer did require medical attention. He was treated, given medication and released.”

Helms said the officer, a three-and-a-half-year veteran of the force, did not require stitches.

Medical personnel drew blood from both men to test for potential diseases, the chief said.

“No charges will be sought due to the circumstances,” Helms said.

The man who had the seizure was transported to Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City for further treatment.

“I’m glad no one else involved sustained any injuries,” Helms said.
