A House Springs man and his mother were arrested last week in Byrnes Mill after allegedly burglarizing a vacant house.
Police Chief Gary Dougherty and Sgt. Roger Ide were driving along Hwy. W in Byrnes Mill at about 11:30 a.m. on May 5 when they saw a man, in his mid-30s, coming from a home in the 4500 block of the highway carrying two large duffle bags, Dougherty said.
Shortly after the man appeared, a woman in her mid-50s, also from House Springs, came walking down the driveway of the house.
“We stopped to do a quick investigation and found the bags were full of items taken from the house,” Dougherty said. “He was also carrying a handgun.”
The man acknowledged he had taken the items from the house, Dougherty said.
“He admitted that was what they were doing, that the house had been empty a long time and they were looking for items he might be able to sell.”
Dougherty said he did not know the value of the items.
“There was nothing worth going to jail for,” he said.
Both the man and the woman had active warrants and were both arrested and transported to the Jefferson County Jail, pending application for warrants.
