Eureka Police are investigating the theft of approximately $25 in quarters after five machines were damaged in the laundry area at the St. Louis West Historic Route 66 KOA Holiday campground, 18475 Hwy. 66. The approximated cost to replace the damaged machines in $1,000, police reported.
Surveillance video showed three people riding bicycles to the campground at about 12:25 a.m. July 22. The three people in the video are seen near a building that has a laundry room that is open 24 hours a day, the report said.
Later that day, employees found holes drilled into the coin boxes of four washing machines and a coin box on a fifth machine appeared to have been pried open. Employees estimated 100 quarters would have been in the machines, which are emptied once a month, according to the report.
As of Aug. 12, the money had been recovered, and no suspects had been identified, Capt. Michael Werges said. He asks anyone with information about the theft to call Eureka Police at 636-938-6600.
