A 33-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, both of Imperial, recently were arrested for allegedly stealing cash from a wallet a woman left behind in a cart at the Walmart Supercenter in Arnold, said Arnold Police Capt. Robert Ruckman.

At about 7:10 p.m. Oct. 3, the woman was at the Walmart store and had placed her wallet and her child in a cart, which turned out to have a bad wheel, so she switched carts and after moving her child to the new one, she forgot to get her wallet, Ruckman said.

Surveillance footage reportedly showed the Imperial man and woman take the wallet from the cart, Ruckman added.

They allegedly took $700 out of the wallet but left some money in it and then left the wallet at the store, Ruckman said.

He said the wallet was recovered at the store, and police were able to identify the suspects from their license plate.

The suspects denied taking money from the wallet, but they were taken into custody, booked and then released pending the application for warrants, Ruckman said.

Arnold Police will seek charges through the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, he said.
