A woman walking through a wooded area in the 100 block of Old Sugar Creek Road in unincorporated Fenton discovered human remains on Monday evening (Oct. 15), said Sgt. Matthew Moore of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office got a call at 5:45 p.m. about the discovery, and when officers arrived, they found a decomposed body, Moore said in an email today (Oct. 16).
The body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
“An autopsy is being conducted today,” Moore said.
He said the autopsy could provide the Sheriff’s Office with information to help identify the person.
Other work to determine the person’s identity has already begun, Moore said.
“Investigators are examining active missing person cases,” he said.
Moore said the Sheriff’s Office doesn’t know how long the person has been dead or how long the body has been lying in the woods along Old Sugar Creek Road.
“The autopsy may provide additional information,” he said.
