David Paul Zufall Jr., 35, of House Springs has been charged with two felonies for allegedly shooting a 44-year-old Byrnes Mill man Tuesday afternoon (May 5) after an apparent road-rage incident in unincorporated Fenton, court records show.
The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged Zufall today (May 6) with first-degree assault, a class A felony punishable by 10 to 30 years or life in prison, and armed criminal action, an unclassified felony punishable by up to three years in prison.
He was being held in the Jefferson County Jail this afternoon without bond, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Zufall allegedly shot the victim multiple times late Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of the Walgreens store, 1210 Sugar Creek Square, Capt. Gary Higginbotham said.
The victim was in fair condition at an area hospital, Higginbotham said today.
Deputies were called at about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday to the store after reports of gunshots. When deputies arrived, the victim and alleged shooter were at the scene. The suspect dropped his gun and was arrested, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
The victim had gone into the store seeking help. He was transported to an area hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
There were passengers in the victim’s vehicle, but they were not injured in the shooting. No one else was at the Walgreen was injured either, but a bullet fragment was found near the store, Higginbotham said.
Witnesses told deputies the suspect was driving recklessly on Hwy. 30 and had cut off the victim. The victim reportedly followed the suspect’s vehicle to Walgreens and confronted the driver in the parking lot. While still in his vehicle, the suspect allegedly drew a handgun and pointed it at the victim, and, according to witnesses, the victim was backing away from the suspect when he allegedly fired at least four shots, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
