Former Eureka High School running back Hassan Haskins has been charged with a felony for allegedly assaulting a woman he was in a relationship with. The woman also has been charged with felonies following two incidents in June, according to Tennessee court records.
Haskins, 23, graduated from Eureka High in 2018 and was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2022 after playing football at the University of Michigan.
It’s unclear if the charges will affect his status with the Titans.
“We are aware of the situation and gathering additional information,” the Titans said in a June 30 written statement.
Haskins was charged June 29 with aggravated assault by strangulation, a class C felony punishable by three to 15 years in a prison and a fine of up to $10,000 stemming from an incident on June 22 at a Nashville home.
The woman, Makiah Shantel Green, 21, also was charged on June 29 with aggravated assault by strangulation, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, both class C felonies, and vandalism, a class D felony punishable by two to 12 years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000, according to court documents.
Haskins was released on a $10,000 bond on June 29 and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 30, court records said.
He allegedly assaulted Green on June 22 at a Nashville home after the two got into an argument because Green “liked” another man’s picture on Instagram, according to the report.
Then, Green reportedly threw Haskins’ shoes from a closet, and when she refused to stop, Haskins allegedly pushed her, causing her to fall and hit her head, the probable-cause statement in the case said.
Green said she kicked Haskins after falling, and he allegedly dragged her from the closet, pushed her onto a bed and started choking her. She said he choked her for 10 to 15 seconds, the report said.
Green said that after Haskins let go of her, she slapped him, and then he slapped her and threw her onto a dog crate before allegedly choking her a second time. He then let her go and left the home, according to the report.
On June 29, Haskins and Green were at a restaurant when they began to argue. They left the restaurant, with Green taking an Uber, an app-based ride service, to a home, and Haskins driving back to on his own and getting to the home before Green arrived, the case’s probable-cause statement said.
Green said after she entered the home, she threw a glass that shattered before going into a bedroom. She also said Haskins broke down the bedroom’s door, and she grabbed a necklace he was wearing, breaking it, the report said.
Haskins then allegedly grabbed Green’s phone and broke it. She said she picked up a phone that belonged to Haskins to call her mother, but when she opened it, she saw conversations and photos from other women on his Snapchat, according to the report.
Green said she threw the phone, damaging its screen, and then hit Haskins on the chest before going to the kitchen. She said she grabbed a knife and planned to slash the tires on Haskins’ vehicle, but he allegedly came into the kitchen with a gun, which he cocked and said, “I hope you would,” the report said.
Green said she dropped the knife. However, Haskins said she attacked him with a broom, jumped on him and strangled him. He also said Green threw a PS5 video game system, which was damaged and put a hole in an upstairs wall, the probable-cause statement said.
Green allegedly could be seen in video hitting Haskins with a broom and her hands and throwing a water bottle at him. Altogether, the damaged PS5, phone and necklace were valued at approximately $6,300, according to the report.
Haskins ran for 2,197 yards and scored 34 touchdowns as a senior at Eureka High. At Michigan, he set a school record for 20 rushing touchdowns during his senior year, and he ran for 169 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-27 win over Ohio State University in November 2021.
The Titans selected Haskins in the fourth round of the NFL Draft with the 131st overall pick. He played in 15 games, rushing 25 times for 93 yards and catching 11 passes for 57 yards last season.
