Arnold Police recently returned a pistol to a 31-year-old Hillsboro man after it was found in a lunchbox lying along I-55 in Arnold. A 65-year-old Arnold man found the lunchbox and turned it over to police, Arnold Police reported.
The Arnold contacted the police at about 3:30 p.m. Oct. 24 and said he was returning from south St. Louis County when he saw the blue, black and yellow lunchbox in the right lane of southbound I-55 shortly after he entered the Arnold city limits. In addition to finding the gun, which was loaded inside the lunchbox, paperwork was inside the box, the report said.
Police used the paperwork to identify the gun owner, who then was able to show paperwork that proved the gun belonged to him, Detective Cpl. Josh Wineinger said.
Police did not say how the owner lost the lunchbox on the interstate.
“It is interesting that (the Arnold man) saw the lunchbox and did the right thing,” Wineinger said. “It is great that the gun got back to the rightful owner.”
