A mobile home at 13331 Hwy. JJ southeast of De Soto sustained minor damage when a grease fire started in the kitchen Wednesday (Feb. 24) during the most recent snow storm, said Assistant Chief Tom Fitzgerald with the De Soto Rural Fire Protection District.
The district got a call about the fire at 7:21 a.m., but the residents had put out the fire by the time firefighters arrived, Fitzgerald said.
He said it was “awesome” the residents were able to extinguish the fire so quickly, especially since the snow storm caused traffic problems and “slowed” the district’s response to the home.
The family of four was home when the fire broke out on the stove and spread to cabinets above it, Fitzgerald said.
Fortunately, none of the family members were hurt and damage was minimal, he said.
The fire damage was contained to the stove and cabinets, but there was smoke damage throughout the home, Fitzgerald said.
Once firefighters arrived at the home, they made sure the fire had not spread anywhere else and they “evacuated smoke” from the home, Fitzgerald said.
He said personnel from the Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District also responded and checked some of the family members for possible smoke inhalation, but none had to be transported for treatment.
The American Red Cross reported that it helped the family of two adults and two children with food, clothing and shelter.
