Eureka Police are investigating damage to a 2013 Dodge Ram parked outside Byerly RV, 295 E. Fifth St. It appears someone drilled a hole into the pickup’s gas tank and stole gas from it, police reported.
Lt. Tom Wille said theft of gas from vehicles has been on the rise since the start of June.
“There has been an increase in the last three weeks,” he said June 29. “It is hard to protect yourself when someone is willing to crawl under your car and drill a hole in the gas tank. The best thing someone can do is be cognizant of where they park. If you park in a commuter lot, try not to leave it too long, if possible. Also, check your gas tank before you start driving or look around your car before you start it.”
Gas was stolen from the pickup between about 7:30 a.m. and 7:40 p.m. June 13. The victim said he discovered the damage to the gas tank after seeing fluid pooled under the truck, the report said.
No estimate for the damage to the pickup was included in the report.
As of June 29, no suspects had been identified, Wille said. He asks anyone with information about the incident to call Eureka Police at 636-938-6600.
