Firefighters kept a brush fire from destroying two homes in the Valles Lake neighborhood north of Valles Mines. No injuries were reported, De Soto Rural Fire Chief Tom Fitzgerald said.

He said the De Soto Rural Fire Protection District got a call at 2:55 p.m. March 9 about a brush fire in the 14200 block of South Lake Drive that burned about an acre and a half of land and was spreading to a shed, jet ski, boat, trailer and two homes owned by different people. The homes did not sustain any major damage.

Fitzgerald said the fire may have been caused by a bonfire the night before.

He said the De Soto Fire Department and the Hematite, Jefferson R-7 and Big River fire protection districts helped with the fire. Valle Ambulance District also responded to the scene.

Fitzgerald said Tuesday, March 11, that the fire protection district had responded to 47 calls within the last seven days, including a dryer vent fire.
