A house in the 8700 block of Hilltop Lane in Morse Mill was damaged by fire on Oct. 20, making it uninhabitable, Cedar Hill Fire Chief Mick Fischer said.

He said the homeowner was not at the house at the time and a neighbor who saw smoke coming out of the house reported the fire.

The Cedar Hill Fire Protection District got a call about the fire at 8:10 a.m., and firefighters arrived on the scene at 8:18 a.m., Fischer said.

He said a space heater by the front door was on, and while a specific cause for the fire could not be determined, he believes it likely was the space heater.

Fischer said space heaters should not be used in unoccupied rooms and placed near items that could catch fire.

He said the homeowner is staying with family.

Fischer said the fire was under control at 9:08 a.m. and crews were on the scene until 10:44 a.m.

The Hillsboro and De Soto Rural fire protection districts helped with the call, and Big River Ambulance responded to the scene.
