The roof of a home in the 5000 block on Lehigh Drive in Imperial was severely damaged by a July 9 fire that started in the attic. The residents got out of the house unharmed, but the house sustained smoke and water damage and was deemed uninhabitable, the Rock Community Fire Protection District reported.
Rock Fire got a call at 5:03 p.m. about the fire, and the first truck arrived at 5:09 p.m. The attic was well involved in fire when firefighters arrived, and because of a high heat index that day, the call was upgraded to a second alarm fire, the district reported.
Firefighters had the blaze under control at 6 p.m., according to the report.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Fire Marshal Jeff DeLapp said Tuesday (July 14).
The Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the family.
The Antonia, Dunklin and Saline Valley fire protections districts and the Rock Township Ambulance also responded to the fire, Rock Fire reported.
