This barn on Lewis Road in Eureka that belonged to the original caretakers of Pevely Farms was destroyed by fire.

A barn in the 500 block of Lewis Road in Eureka that belonged to the original caretakers of Pevely Farms was destroyed by fire Saturday afternoon (March 2). No one was injured, and no other structures were damaged by the fire, said Scott Barthelmass, public information officer for the Eureka Fire Protection District.

At least two vehicles; two motorcycles; a golf cart; and lawn mowers and other lawn equipment were stored in the barn and also were destroyed by the fire. The overall loss was estimated at $100,000, Barthelmass said.

He said the fire was determined to be accidental and caused by a heating lamp attached to the building.

Eureka Fire got a call at 1:03 p.m. about the blaze, and when the first truck arrived on the scene, the barn was well involved in fire. Smoke from the blaze could be seen from Hwy. 109 and I-44, Barthelmass said.

The fire was knocked down at 1:35 p.m. and was under control by 1:46 p.m. There were 15 firetrucks at the scene and Pacific, Valley Park, Fenton, High Ridge, Metro West and Monarch fire protection districts assisted with the call, Barthelmass said.
