The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a recent fire that destroyed an abandoned garage and damaged a nearby house and two sheds on St. Louis Street near Cedar Street in De Soto. No one was injured, said Capt. James Coleman of the De Soto Fire Department.

At about 8:30 p.m. July 30, firefighters were dispatched to the area after a neighbor reported heavy fire and smoke coming from the two-car garage. When firefighters arrived, the garage was well involved in fire, Coleman said.

He said a house that had been on the same property was torn down several years ago and the garage had been abandoned.

Coleman said the neighbor’s house and two sheds were damaged by the fire, too.

As of Tuesday, Aug. 1, the fire marshal had not determined the cause of the fire, Coleman said.

He said firefighters remained on the scene until 1:30 a.m. to assist with the investigation. The De Soto Rural, Hillsboro, Hematite and Jefferson R-7 fire protection districts and the Festus Fire Department helped with the call.
