A fire in a room at the Holiday Inn near Six Flags in Eureka was caused by a malfunctioning air conditioner, authorities said.

A fire that recently broke out in a room at the Holiday Inn near Six Flags in Eureka was caused by a malfunctioning air-conditioning unit. The room was unoccupied when the fire broke out, and no one was injured, said William Stamberger, public information officer for the Eureka Fire Protection District.

“The fire started in an air-conditioning unit in one of the rooms,” he said. “It burned up the curtains in the room, but most of the damage was isolated to that room.”

Stamberger said the condenser in the air conditioner most likely overheated.

Eureka Fire responded to the call about the fire at the hotel, 4901 Six Flags Road, at 5:27 p.m. Aug. 13, and the last unit cleared the hotel at 9:21 p.m., he said.

Stamberger could not give an estimate for the damage to the hotel room or for the extent of smoke damage from the fire.
