Festus R-6 School District officials immediately reacted to a report of an elementary student who had a knife at a bus stop this morning, Sept. 19, according to a statement the district sent to parents.
Other students who saw the student display the knife told the driver when they boarded the bus, which left the stop at about 8:05 a.m. The driver monitored the student while driving, and the bus arrived at 8:11 a.m. at Festus Intermediate School, 1501 Midmeadow Lane, the district reported.
The student never removed the knife from a backpack while on the bus, and an administrator removed the student from the bus when it arrived at the school, the statement said.
Kevin Pope, the district’s spokesperson, said the bus was carrying kindergarten through fifth-grade students. The matter is being handled internally, he said.
