Two dogs died in a fire at a home in the 100 block of Frisco Street in Festus on Monday morning, April 8. The home was significantly damaged, Festus Fire Chief Jeff Broombaugh said No people were inside the home when the fire broke out, he said.
Broombaugh said the Festus Fire Department got a call at 8:25 a.m. about the house fire.
After firefighters and Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District personnel arrived on the scene, they tried to render aid to the two dogs, but both died, he said.
“They were the only pets (in the home),” he added.
The residents of the home will not be able to return until repairs are completed, Broombaugh said.
“On arrival there was heavy smoke from the eaves of the house, and the windows were smoke stained,” he said. “There was heavy smoke damage throughout the structure.”
Broombaugh said he did not know where the residents will live while repairs are made, adding that the Fire Department called the American Red Cross about possibly helping them.
He said Tuesday, April 9, that the cause of the fire did not appear suspicious but was still under investigation.
“It looks like a kitchen fire,” he added.
Firefighters remained on the scene until 11:05 a.m., Broombaugh said
He said the Crystal City and Herculaneum fire departments and the Jefferson R-7, Hematite and Dunklin fire protection districts helped with the call.
