A 54-year-old Fenton man was arrested for allegedly trying to break into a camper at a storage business in the Jefferson County portion of Fenton. The man allegedly told authorities he was looking for his daughter who was locked inside a camper, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported.

At approximately 5:25 p.m. June 10, the Sheriff’s Office got a call about a disturbance near Gravois Road and Saline Lane. While deputies were investigating, they spotted the suspect inside a fenced area at Fenton Self Storage, 359 S. Old Hwy. 141. They found the man standing between two campers with a large metal bar he appeared to be using to pry open the door to one of the campers, the report said.

Deputies ordered the man to stop, but he allegedly kept trying to pry open the door, saying someone was locked inside the camper. The deputies again ordered the man to stop, and he laid down the bar and was arrested without further incident, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

Deputies did not find anyone trapped inside a camper at the business. However, deputies believe the man broke into two other campers at the storage facility, causing about $15,000 in damage to one of the campers and about $10,000 in damage to the other one, the report said.

The man was taken to an area hospital for a mental wellness evaluation. The Sheriff’s Office will seek charges against him for trespassing and second-degree burglary, spokesman Grant Bissell said.
