Fenton-area man charged with stealing

Charles Cole

Charles Monroe Cole, 57, who lives in the Jefferson County portion of Fenton, has been accused of stealing a wallet and $890. The alleged victim had left his wallet on a windowsill outside of a Fenton-area bar, according to court documents.

Cole was arrested on Monday, Aug. 11, and as of Tuesday, Aug. 12, he was being held on a $10,000 bond at the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro. He was arrested after failing to appear in court for an arraignment hearing in May, court records show.

The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged Cole with stealing, a class D felony punishable by up to seven years in prison, court documents said.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was called on Aug. 26, 2024, to Borgetti’s Sports Bar and Grill, 1667 Old Hwy. 141, in the Jefferson County portion of Fenton. A man told a deputy he had left his wallet on a windowsill outside of the bar before it was stolen, the case’s probable-cause statement said.

Surveillance video allegedly showed Cole picking up the wallet outside of the bar, the report said.

A deputy interviewed Cole on Sept. 14, 2024, and Cole allegedly admitted to taking the wallet and going inside the bar. He said he went to the bathroom, removed the cash and threw the wallet and the rest of its contents away, according to the report.

Cole also allegedly told the investigator he spent the money on gambling machines, the report said.
