Law enforcement officers from across Missouri stopped 883 vehicles during the third annual I-44 Summer Speed Campaign. The Eureka Police Department started the annual speed limit enforcement campaign, which spans from where I-44 enters Missouri from Oklahoma to the city of St. Louis.
“It was a big success,” Eureka Police Capt. Michael Werges said.
Werges said up to 21 law enforcement agencies participated in this year’s campaign. The enforcement days were June 16, July 7 and Aug. 18, with an increased number of officers patrolling the interstate for about six hours each day.
“When you see an officer in every county, you probably think as a driver, ‘I better slow down,’” Werges said.
Officers issued 475 hazardous moving citations, 415 speeding citations and 609 warnings for various violations, Eureka Police reported.
“There was a slight increase this year,” Werges said of the number of citations and warnings issued. “We attribute that to having more participating agencies, like the Springfield Police and St. Louis Metropolitan Police departments. We truly encompassed all of I-44 from the Missouri-Oklahoma state line to St. Louis city.”
