jcso 2 children dead 5-28-24

Investigators search a Mazda SUV that was driven this morning to Festus City Hall and Police Station on Tuesday morning by a woman who allegedly told officers she killed two of her children.

Dunklin R-5 School District officials said they identified a student on Tuesday, Sept. 13, who allegedly drew an image that looked like a possible threat against Herculaneum High School.

Superintendent Clint Freeman, who would not release any specific details about the student or the drawing, said the investigation into the incident was still underway on Tuesday.

He said the student had not been arrested, but was taken into custody and turned over to juvenile authorities.

At the end of the school day on Sept. 9, district officials were alerted to “an inappropriate drawing on a piece of notebook paper that was found on the floor of a (Herculaneum High) classroom that could be perceived as threatening,” Freeman said in written statement emailed to district parents and staff on Sept. 12.

The Herculaneum High class day ends at 2:40 p.m.

Freeman said it was determined the drawing did not pose a credible danger. However, he said, any possible threat must be investigated by law enforcement and school officials.

“You have to take everything seriously where it comes to school safety,” he said. “Our school resource officer is working with the Herculaneum Police Department on the investigation. The administration team was investigating over the weekend.”

Freeman said the student could face extended suspension or expulsion pending the results of the investigation.
