A 47-year-old De Soto woman was found to have a substance suspected of being an illegal drug after a car she was traveling in was stopped for having an expired license, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported.
A deputy at about 6:50 p.m. Feb. 2 saw a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu that had an expired license plate traveling south on Athena School Road near Olympian Village. The deputy followed the car onto Ambruster Road and stopped it near the intersection of Rodal Acres, the report said.
While the deputy was talking to the man driving the Malibu, the woman appeared to be clutching a purse. The deputy returned to his vehicle to conduct a records check on the man driving the car before returning to issue the man a warning for driving with an expired license plate, according to the report.
The deputy noticed the woman was no longer holding the purse, and it appeared there were items from the purse on the floorboard. The deputy asked the man driving the car for consent to search the vehicle, and the man agreed to allow the search, the report said.
The deputy allegedly found a pouch under the front passenger’s seat, where the woman was sitting, and there was a white crystal substance in the bag, according to the report.
The woman was released at the scene, pending an application of warrant, the report said.
Depending on results of the drug analysis, the Sheriff’s Office will seek charges against the woman through the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for possession of a controlled substance, Capt. Matt Moore said.
