De Soto Police Officer Jacob Schurman rescued three people from a stalled vehicle in floodwaters on May 13 after flash flooding hit the area, Capt. Jeffrey Wynn said.

At 6:10 p.m. that day, a 77-year-old De Soto woman drove a 2012 Ford Escape into the floodwaters at Valley Place and Seventh Street in De Soto, an area that commonly floods, Wynn said.

He said the water came up quickly that day, covering the roadway.

Wynn said Schurman, who has been with the department two years, was driving around the area, checking lower-altitude areas known for flooding, when he spotted the vehicle stalled in the floodwaters.

Wynn said the officer immediately walked to the SUV and got the woman and her two passengers, a 30-year-old man and a 15-year-old woman, safely out of the floodwaters.

The woman was having trouble getting out of the SUV because the current was pushing on the door, Wynn said.

He said the water was above the officer’s knees.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed from the scene after the water receded.
