pedestrian struck

A 50-year-old De Soto-area man died after he was walking southbound in the road at Hwy. 21 and Amvets Drive in De Soto and was struck by a pickup at 5:25 a.m. today, Sept. 9, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.

The man has been identified, but the highway patrol would not release his name.

A 25-year-old Hillsboro man was driving the pickup, a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500, that hit the De Soto-area man, who was not visible to the driver, the highway patrol reported.

Cpl. Dallas Thompson, a highway patrol spokesman, said he believes the De Soto-area man’s body was found this morning in a ditch by someone walking by. The De Soto Police Department pronounced the man dead at the scene at 6:53 a.m., and the man was taken to the St. Louis County Morgue by Edwards Mortuary Services.

Sgt. Andy Gadberry, another highway patrol spokesperson, said officers learned that the Hillsboro man had contacted authorities earlier in the morning about hitting something in the road. The driver indicated he didn’t know what he had hit.

The pickup had moderate damage and the driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was uninjured, the report said.
