Crystal City Police patch

A 38-year-old Pevely woman who was being held in the Crystal City Jail was found unresponsive and died a short time later at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City, authorities reported.

Crystal City Police officers were conducting prisoner cell checks at approximately 7:48 p.m. Feb. 9, when Kimberly Kertz, 38, of Pevely was found unresponsive. Officers began administering medical attention, and Kertz was transported by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance to the hospital, Crystal City Police reported today (Feb. 15) in a written statement.

“A short time later the subject was pronounced dead by hospital medical personnel,” the report said. “The incident is under investigation and an autopsy was performed by the St. Louis Medical Examiner’s Office. The cause of death is unknown at this time.”

Crystal City Police Chief Chad Helms said his department is investigating the death.

“She had been in our facility a little less than two days,” Helms said. “She was arrested for multiple warrants.”
