Crystal City Police door

There’s no way they trained for this at the Police Academy.

A Crystal City warrant officer performed a piggyback extraction of three inmates at the city jail Sept. 8 after a sewer backup flooded the jail and nearby office space.

The trouble bubbled up about 8:45 p.m.

“Three were carried out piggyback style by the warrant officer, Brent Steger,” Police Chief Jeff McCreary said. “He went above and beyond the call of duty.

“You’ve heard of the Medal of Valor,” the chief said. “He should get the Plunger of Valor.”

Two other officers hurried to process paperwork needed to release all seven guests in the jail before the backwater reached a critical depth. All seven were being held for misdemeanors.

McCreary said plumbers attributed the backup to a clog near the street.

The backup necessitated an $800 hazardous waste cleanup in the jail. With the plumbing bill, the tab came to $992.50. The jail was open for business the next day.
