Kurt Hografe of Cedar Hill said he saw his neighbor's deck on fire and jumped into action on July 23.
Mick Fischer, chief of the Cedar Hill Fire Protection District, said the fire was at 8450 Marko Drive.
He said Hografe worked to put out the fire with a garden hose while his teenage daughter, Jordyn, called 911.
Fischer said by the time Cedar Hill firefighters arrived on the scene at 6:04 p.m., the fire was almost out, adding that it was extinguished by 6:12 p.m.
“The fire started on the exterior of the house and was burning up the siding and was about to go into the attic,” he said. “(Hografe) was able to keep it from spreading into the house.”
Fischer said the fire was caused by a burning cigarette butt and was accidental.
He said he plans to give both Kurt and Jordyn Hografe a certificate of commendation.
“He probably saved his neighbor's house because if that fire got into the attic, they probably would have lost their whole house,” Fischer said.
It was about 105 degrees when the call for the fire came in, Fischer said.
“He also saved me from probably sending numerous firefighters to the hospital for exhaustion, dehydration,” Fischer said.
No one was injured during the fire, but Big River Ambulance was on the scene as a precaution, Fischer said.
