The Cedar Hill Fire Protection District responded to a call about a fire at a home in the 6200 block of Cedar Drive in Cedar Hill over the weekend, but by the time firefighters arrived, the homeowner had it under control, Chief Mick Fischer said.
He reported that a fire started in the modular home’s furnace and ductwork on Nov. 12, but it was quickly extinguished, thanks to the homeowner’s “quick thinking.”
Firefighters were dispatched at 9:22 p.m. and arrived at 9:30 p.m. to discover light smoke billowing from the home, but the problem was mostly under control after the homeowner had shut off power to the furnace and used a garden hose to extinguish the flames, Fischer said.
He said the fire was contained to the furnace area.
Firefighters remained on the scene for an hour, leaving at 10:31 p.m., after making sure the home was ventilated, the damage was assessed, and the home’s exterior and interior were checked for any signs of further danger.
“I have to commend the homeowner for their quick thinking and action,” Fischer said. “Otherwise, it could have been a lot worse.”
He said other fire units had been called but were canceled while on route to the scene.
