A Festus man told police he saw someone steal his car from outside his house in the 1100 block of North Third Street but was unable to stop the theft. The car was found a short time later on fire in Herculaneum, Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis said.

He said the reported theft occurred about 9:30 p.m. Monday, July 25.

“The 25-year-old victim said he was unloading stuff from his 2015 Subaru Legacy and was in the house,” Lewis said. “The key was in the ignition and the car was running. When he came out, he saw a slim male about 6 feet tall wearing a black hat, a black shirt and something hiding his face. He saw the guy walk to the car, get in and drive off.

“A short while later we heard over the radio that Herculaneum Fire and Police were at a burning car at Ferry Road. It was the victim’s vehicle.”

Lewis said the Legacy was destroyed.

He did not have a value for the Legacy.

As of July 26, no arrests had been made, Lewis said. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Festus Police at 636-937-3646.
