Carla J. Brooks, 38, of Hillsboro, a prior offender, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison following felony drug charges and a parole violation, court records said.

On April 22, a Jefferson County deputy pulled over Brooks for speeding on Old Hwy. 21 at Hwy. A in Hillsboro, and while searching the vehicle, the deputy found a crystal-like substance in her purse. The substance tested positive for methamphetamine, the probable-cause statement said.

Brooks pleaded guilty to felony possession of a controlled substance, and on May 22, Jefferson County Div. 6 Circuit Judge Troy A. Cardona sentenced her to seven years in prison.

Also on May 22, Cardona executed a 12-year sentence the woman previously was sentenced to for drug trafficking stemming from a December 2014 incident in Jefferson County, court papers show.

In the 2014 case, Brooks was found with more than 30 grams of methamphetamine. She pleaded guilty to felony trafficking, and on Sept. 26, 2016, was sentenced to 12 years in prison. However, the sentence was suspended and she got five years’ probation. She violated the probation, though, and the sentence was executed, according to court documents.

The seven- and 12-year terms are to be served concurrently, or at the same time. In addition, Brooks may be released early if she successfully completes a 120-day treatment program, court papers indicate.

Jefferson County assistant prosecuting attorney Trisha C. Stefanski handled the cases.

On Nov. 24, 2015, a co-defendant in the drug trafficking case, Daniel P. Dunnegan, 45, of Cedar Hill, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and was sentenced to one year in jail, court records said.

Brooks is currently in the Chillicothe Correctional Center.
