Nicholas Wann, 33, of Bonne Terre has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Christopher Moses, 34, of unincorporated Fenton, Illinois State Police reported.

Authorities had identified Wann as a person of interest after the shooting, and he turned himself into to Bonne Terre Police on Monday (Nov. 26), Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Michael Lewis said.

The St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Wann Tuesday night (Nov. 27) with one count of first-degree murder, a class M felony in Illinois. A $400,000 bond was set for Wann, who was still in custody today (Nov. 28) at St. Francois County Jail, Illinois State Police reported.

Moses was found dead the morning of Nov. 23 in a pickup truck along northbound Hwy. 3 near the interchange for I-55 and I-64 in Sauget, Ill. He was last seen leaving Pop’s Nightclub, 401 Monsanto Ave., in Sauget, and police said they believed Moses’ pickup was followed by several people in a black Dodge Ram.

Illinois State Police had released video surveillance images of five people – three men and two woman – considered to be persons of interest in the investigation. Lewis said all five had been identified.

One man and one woman were still being sought for questioning and remain persons of interest, and one man and one woman were deemed not to be involved in the fatal shooting, Lewis said.

At 8:45 a.m., Illinois State Police were dispatched to the area near Hwy. 3 and Eighth Street for a report that a vehicle had ran off the road there, according to a written statement from the police.

State troopers found a Nissan Frontier in the embankment, and Moses was found inside dead from a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at 9:55 p.m., the report said.

It appeared Moses was shot while he was driving the pickup. He was alone when he was shot, according to the report.

Police are still looking for witnesses who have information about what took place along Hwy. 3 that led to Moses’s death.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Lewis at 618-201-0070 or by email at michael_lewis@isp.state.il.us. People also may call CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-8477 to remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward for information.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for Moses’s children – a 14-year-old son, an 11-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter.

Murder charges in Illinois, sometimes referred to a class M felony, can carry either a life sentence or a sentence of not less than 20 years and not more than 60 years in prison.
