A camper parked at a home in the Lake Wauwanoka development east of Hillsboro was destroyed by a fire Saturday afternoon (April 3), but firefighters contained an associated brush fire from spreading to nearby homes. No one was injured, Hillsboro Fire Chief Brian Gaudet reported.
He said the district got a call around 12:05 p.m. about the fire in the 1000 block of North Lake Drive.
“It was a large pull-behind camper,” Gaudet said. “The camper was located at a residence and when crews arrived, it was well involved. No one was inside it. We had some brush involved. The residents who owned the camper were in the house.
“The fire was a danger of spreading to multiple homes because of the brush fire. But, crews contained it.”
Gaudet said the camper was “a total loss.”
With no hydrants in the area, firefighters had to use water from their pumper and tanker trucks to fight the blaze, he said.
“The cause is undetermined, but not suspicious,” Gaudet said.
The Mapaville, Goldman and De Soto Rural fire protection districts helped with the call, and the Valle Ambulance District responded to the scene, he said.
