A 54-year-old Barnhart man was scammed out of $1,800 when he filled out an online form to be a “secret shopper” and received a fraudulent check for payment, Arnold Police reported.
The man told police he filled out the form in May, and on Nov. 6, he received a check for $2,480 and instructions to buy $1,800 worth of gift cards from the Arnold Walmart store and keep the remaining $680. He bought the cards and filled out an online form with the information from the gift cards, the report said.
Later, however, the $2,480 check he deposited was declined, the report said.
Capt. Rich Shular said Arnold Police forwarded the case to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. He asks anyone hears about a similar scheme to call Arnold Police at 636-296-3204.
