The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an infant, whose father was involved in a crash this afternoon (March 9) while driving the 2-month old boy to the hospital. Another family member was in the car that crashed at Buck Creek Road near Hwy. 67 southwest of Festus, Sheriff Dave Marshak said.

Deputies were dispatched at about 2 p.m. to the crash site, where the Ford Taurus the father was driving ran off the road and hit a telephone pole. After the crash, the baby’s father ran to a nearby home to seek help, but the infant was dead when authorities arrived, Marshak said.

The incident is under investigation, but the child appears to have died before the accident, Marshak said.

He said the infant’s mother was transported from her home to an area hospital because of stress-related symptoms.

Marshak said the father found the infant unresponsive at the family’s home when he returned home from work.
