A fence at the Hillsboro Community Cemetery was damaged by vandals.

Someone driving a pickup knocked over a wrought-iron fence and caused other damage in the Hillsboro Community Cemetery, 584 Vreeland Road. The vandalism occurred in broad daylight June 22, said Larry Holland, one of the cemetery trustees.

He said a witness saw a dark-colored, maybe black, late-model Chevrolet pickup leaving the cemetery at about 2 p.m. that day. The truck had damage to the front grill, scratches on the front and damage to the right front fender and right lower door.

The witness did not provide a description of the driver, Holland said.

“The main damage is to the fence,” he said. “It’s a wrought-iron fence and about 30 feet of it was damaged. It’s a historic fence going back to the 1950s.”

In addition, a monument marking a corner of a family’s section of graves was damaged, Holland said.

He said cemetery trustees are seeking estimates for the repairs and would like to see the suspect answer for the crime.

Hillsboro Police Chief Steve Meinberg said Tuesday (July 2) that the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to call the Hillsboro Police at 636-797-3334.
