A 44-year-old Arnold woman lost $56,000 in a recent phone scam involving her Amazon account. The case has been forwarded to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, Arnold Police reported.
The woman contacted Arnold Police on Feb. 20 about the scam. She said a man called her claiming to work for Amazon and warning her about two Apple products he said were purchased fraudulently on her Amazon account, the report said.
The woman said she was told to download a Zoho customer service app to her phone and to give the caller access to her phone. The caller also reportedly instructed her to purchase Target and Apple gift cards numerous times between Jan. 18 through Feb. 10 and to provide him with the gift cards’ numbers, Arnold Police said.
The woman made the purchases and provided the gift card numbers.
As of Feb. 28, none of the woman’s money had been recovered, and no suspects had been identified, Cpl. Brett Ackermann said.
“A phone number that the man called from was provided, and the hope is the FBI has received more of these cases from the same number and will be able to track the person making the calls down,” he said.
