Vanessa J. Gutierrez, 44, of Arnold drowned Saturday (May 18) in the Black River after a kayak she was in capsized, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.
Gutierrez was in a kayak that hit a submerged log in the river at about 5:50 p.m. She was thrown from the kayak and became lodged against the log and pulled under the water, the patrol said.
The Reynolds County coroner pronounced the time of death at 8:50 p.m. Saturday, according to the report.
Gutierrez was not wearing a life jacket, the patrol reported.
The kayak capsized near the Smiley Face take-out, about a mile south of Lesterville, the report said.
