A man who was renting a mobile home in Imperial is facing charges after a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy described the home’s condition as “deplorable.” The deputy had gone to the home to serve an eviction notice and noted multiple occurrences of child neglect and animal abuse, according to court documents.

Alexander Joseph Bohen, 29, was charged on July 3 with two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, which are class A misdemeanors and each punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000; and five counts of animal neglect or abandonment, which are class C misdemeanors with each carrying a penalty of up to 15 days in jail and a fine of up to $700, court records show.

The deputy on Jan. 23 went to the home on Birch Drive and found the home littered with trash and noted an overwhelming odor of feline urine. Two children, both younger than 10, lived at the home, and there was a total of 21 animals along with one dead dog in the home, according to the case’s probable-cause statement.

A dog allegedly was found dead and decaying in a crate, and two other dogs were locked in a crate that had a massive amount of feces. There also was a large amount of animal excrement on the home’s floor and multiple malnourished animals, the report said.

The deputy reported there were four dogs, 11 cats, two turtles and four lizards in the home.

A bathtub in the home was filled with trash, and there was no place for the children to bathe, according to the report.
